What were the 100 largest Georgia counties in 1940?

Fulton was the largest county in Georgia back in 1940, but very few of its neighbors ranked in the top 15.

A look back at Georgia’s census population in 1940 really illustrates the rise of the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), the Peach State’s 800-pound gorilla.

In terms of counties with the highest population back in 1940, Fulton, Cobb and Dekalb were the only Atlanta MSA counties among the top 15. Back then, metro counties like Clayton and Forsyth were especially sleepy, and both had a population of around 11,000 residents.

Two things happened in the 1950s to help jumpstart metro Atlanta. Air conditioning became much more available and affordable, and the south suddenly became more tolerable for people and companies looking to relocate. Around that same time was the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956, which paved the way for Interstate 75 and Interstate 85, both of which run smackdab through the middle of Atlanta. Interstate 75 was the first interstate completed in the United States and quickly became a behemoth, connecting Detroit with Miami and everything in between, which included Atlanta.

Later came Hartfield-Jackson International Airport, and after that metro Atlanta really took off.

Below is a list of the 100 most-populated counties in Georgia just prior to America’s entry into World War II, followed by each county’s population at that time. On the second line, meanwhile, is where each county ranked in to the 2020 census population count.

Here are the biggest risers on the list:

• Forsyth went from being the 91st-largest county in Georgia in 1940 to No. 8 in 2020.

• Houston went from being the 92nd-largest county in Georgia in 1940 to No. 14 in 2020. (Houston County is the only non-Atlanta MSA county among the “fastest risers.”…Houston’s high rate of population growth can be overwhelmingly attributed to the establishment of Robins Air Force Base, which became operational in 1942).

• Clayton went from being the 89th-largest county in Georgia in 1940 to No. 5 in 2020.

• Paulding went from being the 80th-largest county in Georgia in 1940 to No. 13 in 2020.

• Henry went from being the 66th-largest county in Georgia in 1940 to No. 9 in 2020.
