EDITOR’S NOTE: All population totals listed in this article are from the United States Census Bureau’s database (“Annual estimates of the resident population by sex, race, and Hispanic origin…”).
At the turn of the century, from a percentage standpoint, seven Georgia counties had a double-digit Hispanic population.
By 2022, that number was 36.
Furthermore, a total of 25 counties are now at least 1-in-8 Hispanic, which compares to four counties back in 2000.
All totaled, according to the Census data, Georgia’s Hispanic population roughly doubled between 2000 and 2022, increasing from 5.3 percent to 10.6 percent. Most of the largest relative increases were recorded in south Georgia and middle Georgia counties, although the highest Hispanic concentrations remain north of Interstate 20. Out of the 19 Georgia counties with a Hispanic population north of 10,000, only Muscogee and Chatham would not be considered north Georgia.
Gwinnett County continues to have the largest Hispanic population, and it’s one that will soon eclipse 200,000 people. Gwinnett has twice as many Hispanic residents as any other Georgia county, and Gwinnett accounts for roughly 1-in-every-5 Hispanics living in Georgia.
Below is a ranked list of the Georgia counties with the largest percentage increase in its Hispanic population between 2000–2022. The number on the second line, meanwhile, is the Hispanic population total for that county, according to the 2022 Census estimates.
